Tonight we discussed the merits and limitations of Apple's Time Machine and Time Capsule backup solution and the alternative and extended backup strategies that will keep your data safe and secure.
Key Points: - There are 3 main types of backups:
- - Local (Technically called On-Line, but refers to a drive that is directly accessible by, and connected to your computer rather than on the web, so we use local to avoid confusion - example: USB thumb drive, external hard drive, secondary internal hard drive)
- - Near-line (backup that is saved in an altered archival state that need additional software to manage and access - example: Time Machine backup with Time Capsule)
- - Offsite (Backups stored in another location - example: cloned drive stored elsewhere, cloud storage, dropbox)
Check out Weldon Dodd's excellent article (inspired a lot of our notes):
- Time Machine is an excellent incremental backup tool, but should not be your only backup (not bootable)
- A clone of your boot drive is recommended
- An off-site clone is also highly recommended
- A UPS to protect against power surges will go a long way towards saving your hardware, and by extension your data
